New nature-related measure adapted in Latvian
24 September 2025
At the 67th International Scientific Conference of Daugavpils University, Assistant Aija Ozola from the Department of Health Psychology and Pedagogy at Rīga Stradiņš University, presented a study on the adaptation and validation of the Latvian short version of the Nature Relatedness Scale. The research was developed in collaboration with Professor Kristīne Mārtinsone.
Nature relatedness reflects an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and experiential connection to the natural environment—a trait closely associated with well-being and pro-environmental behavior. The study aimed to adapt the 6-item version of the scale (NR-6) to the Latvian cultural context and to evaluate its psychometric properties.
The validated instrument offers a concise and reliable tool suitable for use in ecological psychology, sustainability education, and well-being research in Latvia. Preliminary results support its validity and highlight its relevance for both environmental and psychological studies.
The newly adapted scale will also be used to assess participants’ nature relatedness in an ongoing nature-based digital intervention currently being developed within the Erasmus+ cooperation partnership project “GreenTouch: EcoMind Development for Higher Education Future,” implemented by an international research team representing Latvia, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Portugal.
